How long does recovery after birth take?
The check-up is around six weeks. Your recovery takes longer, and that goes for your body and your mind.
Care is a period, not an appointment
The American college of obstetricians redefined postpartum care as an ongoing process: contact within three weeks of birth and a close-out no later than twelve weeks, instead of a single check afterwards.
Mental symptoms can start later
Symptoms can begin while you are pregnant, soon after birth, or up to a year after your baby is born. Starting later does not make it less likely.
When not to wait
Call your midwife or doctor if you feel low, anxious or empty for a longer stretch, or if you do not recognise yourself. With thoughts of suicide or of harming your baby, seek immediate help. That is the route care providers themselves recommend.
